Maybe some of the responses were sent straight to me, so for the group
here are the responses to my question about calculating areas.
Thanks again for the help!

Ann,
You can calculate area by using the field calculator .. checked advanced
and copy & paste this into the Pre-Logic VBA Script Area
Dim dblArea as double
Dim pArea as IArea
Set pArea = [shape]
dblArea = pArea.area
Just below this type dblArea in the window
Length - same thing only copy & paste
Dim dblLength as double
Dim pCurve as ICurve
Set pCurve = [shape]
dblLength = pCurve.Length
then type dblLength in the window below this area ..
Acreage = Area / 43560

The demo version of XTools Pro will update area and acreage (no need to
buy the license).

you can actually use some of the functionality of X Tools in the
unregistered version. Calculating acreage is one of them. I think it is
available at any license level.
ESRI has some on their website too, in scripts

Yes there is a version of xtools for ArcGIS 9.1 but I believe you have
to pay for it now. If you are using Geodatabases instead of Shapefiles
or coverages, ArcGIS automatically will calculate length, perimeter, and
area where applicable. You would still need to manually calculate
acreage but the help has a formula to do that using the Field
Calculator.
