shrug-l: once in a while

Excellent way to put it:

	A) they submit ads to SHRUG and don't actually read the
postings,
	B) they read the postings and don't know how to help (and if
that is true, why take their "ArcGIS type" classes?) or
	3) they read the postings and know how to help but are not
community minded enough to do so.

I don't like any of these choices

If they have GIS Courses, then they should advertise those when
they have them. I think that the example of Tripp Corbin is a great one.
Tripp DOES contribute regularly to the listserv- in fact, he has helped
me personally more than once. Tripp (in my opinion) is a real SHRUGgie
and in my opinion has earned the unofficial "right" to post his classes,
because we can all see that he knows what he is talking about. (not to
mention being a GISP and I think an ESRI certified instructor - Tripp,
is that correct?) I have never seen anyone from Computer Tutors
contribute to a GIS discussion on SHRUG. That doesn't mean that Computer
Tutors doesn't know their GIS, it just means that either A) they submit
ads to SHRUG and don't actually read the postings, B) they read the
postings and don't know how to help (and if that is true, why take their
"ArcGIS type" classes?) or 3) they read the postings and know how to
help but are not community minded enough to do so. I don't like any of
these choices, because we all know that helping each other within reason
is a core value of our discipline- that is why SHRUG exists in the first
place.

You kno, once in a while, they do have "ArcGIS" type course(s)

[not defending them or "taking their side", just stating a fact]

I agree that GIS classes should be posted. In fact, I believe
that most of the GIS courses posted to the group are from true SHRUGgers
that contribute regularly to the group. Tripp Corbin from Keck & Wood is
a example of a real SHRUG member that also happens to teach GIS courses.

Computer Tutors is just using the group for advertising, and
off-topic advertising at that.

That's why I suggest the old fashioned newsgroup revenge on
off-topic postings - flame them.

Well hold on a bit. If they were advertising courses that would
count
towards GISP certification or continuing education for the GISP
certification, I, for one, would welcome them. It's just that
we don't want
to see the list server filled up with a bunch of non-GIS related
courses that
most of us could teach anyway.

I agree! SHRUG should not be free advertising. Can't the SHRUG
listserv admin
	block them?
