SHRUGGERS -
I am pleased to announce that the Geographic Mapping section of the
Surveying and Mapping office in FDOT is currently accepting applications
for a Surveying and Mapping Specialist in Tallahassee. Please see below
for a position description and job duties.
DESCRIPTION:
The major responsibility of this position is to perform highly complex
assignments in support of the production of the County General Highway
Mapping program and other geographic maps through the utilization of
Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Performs necessary assignments in the preparation of the county general
highway maps. The maps are updated as instructed in “The Handbook for
Preparing County General Highway Maps” utilizing computer aided drafting
(CAD). Utilizes independent judgment to compile supplemental data, and
collect, record, and analyze data in support of geographic mapping
projects. Other sources of mapping information are referenced to obtain the
most current mapping information available. Independent judgment must be
utilized to determine the specific information utilized and map design.
Performs the necessary activities to develop the maps in a Geographic
Information System (GIS) utilizing ESRI (Environmental Systems Research
Institute) mapping software. A knowledge of geographic information systems
will be necessary to complete assignments.
Performs the necessary assignments in the preparation of other geographic
maps. Various mapping programs are utilized to prepare maps for other DOT
offices and other agencies.
Performs other highly complex assignments of the Surveying & Mapping
Office, including the field inventory of the county general highway maps.
Field inventories must be completed in compliance with established
methodology as outlined in “The Handbook for Preparing County General
Highway Maps”.
Other duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of computer aided drafting (CAD) software.
Ability to update the county general highway maps and other geographic maps
utilizing mapping software.
Knowledge in the development of geographic information systems.
Knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
Ability to perform basic photo-interpretation of cultural and physical
features.
Ability to utilize digital aerial imagery for use in the preparation of
geographic mapping projects.
Proven ability to utilize independent judgment.
Ability to perform other complex assignments of the Surveying & Mapping
Office including the field inventory of the county general highway maps.
Ability to utilize Global Positioning Systems (GPS) derived data.
