Nonie -
I'll forward your questions to a couple of folks at Water Management who
are trained graphics artists now working in GIS. I know they have years
of Illustrator experience.
If you haven't already searched the ESRI on-line user message board, I
found 158 references to "Adobe Illustrator" -
http://forums.esri.com/SearchResults.asp?c=93&eSortBy=1&eDateLimit=0&eFo
rums=1730&eForums=989&eForums=1731&eForums=982&eQueryType=0&eQuery=Adobe
+Illustrator&btnSearch=search
The whole graphic design side of GIS seems to be largely ignored by the
GIS trainers, and what instructional information I have found was sorely
lacking. Some of the worst-looking 6'x6' wall maps I've EVER seen have
been produced by highly-trained GIS folks who apparently had no design
training.

PS - are there any orange groves left in northern Pinellas County? I
grew up there, long ago.

Subject: shrug-l: Books - re: GIS/Adobe Illustrator combination?
On the same subject - can any of you suggest some resources to help me?
I've been doing a search for books using search terms like:
["Adobe Illustrator" and GIS], ["Adobe Illustrator" and cartography],
["Adobe Illustrator" and maps].
I haven't had TOO much luck.
I was able to find these interesting materials:
http://gis2.esri.com/library/userconf/proc05/papers/pap1101.pdf
http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/dmt/docs/Rupp04b.pdf
What I guess I am looking for is some book (or website, whatever) where
I can learn how to
manipulate maps using Adobe Illustrator, or (to put it another way) I
have a lot of Illustrator
manuals and how-to books, but they all apply to graphics in general. I'd
like to know if there
are any resources for Illustrator that deal with mapping specifically.
Thanks!!!

Subject: shrug-l: Exporting ArcMap document for use in Adobe Illustrator
Hello all - I'm requesting your opinions here.
We have a need to manipulate our maps graphically beyond what ArcMap can
do.
(Or - what it can do - software that is specifically for graphics can do
better/faster/more efficiently)
Do any of the rest of you use something besides an ESRI product to
manipulate your maps?
If so - what?
If you have a graphics program - do you then use any other software,
like the Avenza products - as a "bridge" between the two?
Thank you,
