shrug-l: trimble geoXT to laptop - serial connection?

Hi all - more of a Trimble thing than ESRI - but has anyone had any luck outputting a serial connection to a laptop with a GeoXT?  I'm using the serial clip and a USB to Serial connector.  COM ports checked.

Baud 4800
Bits 8
Stop 1
Parity Odd
Flow Control None
