Exactly.

Google maps are great if you sort of want to get there sometimes - but
if you have to get there, every time, a real GIS with responsible staff
is essential.

Here is another example of why GIS should not be replaced with only
Google services: http://g.co/maps/yfhun

Jacob makes an excellent point. I hear of a lot of pressure for groups
and individuals who want to replace GIS with Google. They just don't
know that they are going to receive in turn for their cost savings.

Seriously, maybe whenever anyone runs across something this bad in
Google, they should share it with this group. We could have a few
examples to use whenever a bean counter says, "We don't need GIS, Google
is good enough." Can you imagine several more examples like the one Joe
sent? An accurate GIS map made with good local data vs. a flawed Google
map of the same area.

Maybe this could be a S.H.R.U.G. poster contest - each poster would
feature a quality GIS map on one half and an inaccurate Google map of
the same area on the other half. What if we had several such posters,
the PDF files could be shared. Anytime people needed to describe to the
powers that be the value of their GIS program, they could print these
posters and show them (even if the poster is not of their locality - the
point is to show that Google is not sufficient for many uses). And it is
not only imagery problems - we all have seen problems in the Google
streets vs. local data. A picture is worth a thousand words.

An NEVER try to navigate "Local" waters either Jim (Lanark Village) just
south of Tallahassee, FL.

The island locally know as Bird Island or Lanark Reef is almost
completely missing from Google

Same area with Bing from a GIS project Basemap

Have they sued Google yet for sinking their ships?

Because as we all know Google is always "right" and that's why we don't
need GIS people. (you can't hear the extreme sarcasm in my voice, but
it's there trust me)

Reminds me of a time when a Google sales person was pitching some of
their products to me and repeatedly told me that with "our" products you
don't need GIS people, yea sign me up for that...

Good example to keep around the next time management or politicians say,
"Why do we need you, we have Google!"

They just might sink you ship!

Thanks for sharing Jim.

Interesting things afoot in Sydney harbor. The Australians have new
submergible ships. That is how it appears in Google Earth. Nice job
guys!!! Thought The GIS community might find this humorous.
