Kevin Mickey's presentation and bio below:
"The Georgia Initiative": Beginning in 2011 the State of Georgia began implementing a series of Hazus-MH related initiatives that have made it an exemplary model of the benefits that can be realized by establishing a culture based on careful planning, innovation, trust and collaboration. Successful outcomes of these initiatives to date include plans to create a statewide building inventory that will support enhanced mitigation plans; development of statewide enhanced parcels, address points and land use; research on the impacts of climate change in coastal communities; and successful funding that has supported the creation of the first Geographic Information Office for the state. This presentation will explore the key milestones that have led Georgia to the present as well as discuss the plans that are in place to ensure continued success. The presentation will highlight the best practices that have made Georgia successful and that could potentially be applied in other states and communities.

"Bio": Kevin Mickey is the Director of Development and Geospatial Technologies Education at The Polis Center, an applied research center at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He is also Adjunct Associate Faculty for the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI where he teaches graduate courses in the application of GIS for emergency management and public safety. He has been a lead instructor since 2003 for the FEMA Emergency Management Institute where he has designed and managed development of over two dozen courses in flood, earthquake and hurricane risk assessment, disaster operations, and data management. He has over 25 years of consulting experience. For the past decade he has been focused on the creation of geospatial tools and workflows for managing natural hazard risk, conducting risk assessments, and developing mitigation plans for multiple communities. He has also supported the governments of Canada and Singapore by providing recommendations on flood risk mitigation tools and strategies. Kevin currently serves as Secretary of the Multihazard Mitigation Council of the National Institute of Building Sciences Board of Direction.
