shrug-l: Need some help with VBA

Any VBA programmers out there willing to help out with a code statement that is so simple it eludes me?

I'm trying to run a simple pre-logic VBA field calculation in an automated ArcCatalog (9.3.1) process, but I can't seem to get it to work without crashing to the debugger.  Searches online are varied and too generic for my specific need.
