tools are generic and can be used for many fields of

underutilized by Engineers and Directors of Public Works and Utilities.
Primarily this is due to these professionals using different tools in the past
and not having a clear understanding of the potential of using GIS.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>This presentation focuses on some new
tools that can be used for capacity analysis of sewer systems as well as the
design of roadway, drainage, water and sewer systems.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

development stage, they still have immediate benefits to engineers in planning,
design, and ordinance compliance verification.<SPAN

which can are very tedious to do by hand.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</SPAN>The following is a brief description of these
tools:<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>After setting flow rates per parcel,
this group of tools draws a lateral which connects each parcel to the closest
gravity main then calculates the total cumulative flow in each gravity
pipe.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>This is an excellent tool for
engineers concerned with approving new developments. By setting the new
increased flow rates, recalculating total flow is automatic.

style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>This tool calculates road elevations
based on existing elevation and road slopes set by the engineer.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>The calculation is a simple Existing
Elevation + (Slope X Distance).<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">
</SPAN>However, transfer of values from points to lines allows GIS to read the
existing elevation, make a line/slope calculation and transfer the new elevation
to the new point.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>GIS knows line
lengths so this eliminates the need to measure in AutoCAD, calculate in excel
and re-write in AutoCAD.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Exporting
calculated elevations to AutoCAD is automatic from GIS.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Building from the slope calculation and
transfer tools, this tool allows the engineer to design gravity sewers.<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>The user sets the first manhole, then
sets another manhole a certain distance away (max 400 LF).<SPAN
style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>The script reads the ground elevation
for the first manhole, draws the gravity main, draws the second manhole then
sets all invert elevations based on preset minimum coverage depths and
slopes.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>Then the GIS labels all
manholes with all elevations separated by direction.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
