I had input data worthy of its expense (such as standard/level-1G imagery…but
free imagery of the sort intended for simple browsing or GIS backdrop is rarely
going to meet the basic specs for further processing) and was intending to put
out a sophisticated product such as a multispectral classification to USGS Level
II or III (for classification to further levels of detail you will likely be in
the territory of more expensive hyperspectral imagery and/or stereo/LIDAR fusion
and probably using ENVI or IDL software). But if a simple vegetation
index product (NDVI, SAVI, etc.) will suffice, and your input data meets the
basic specs for generating it (red band, near-infrared band, the geocorrection
and if necessary the mosaic-making/tiling already done), it can be generated
with much cheaper software, to say prepare a final plot with two or three
legend colors for your choice of vegetation index thresholds (such as
non-vegetated, sparsely-vegetated, thickly-vegetated)…however, the
drawback to such a simple (and cheap) approach is the ambiguity it holds for
the case of water-bodies overgrown with aquatic vegetation or flooded swamp
forest (that situation can be solved to some extent if you use Imagine and one
of the input imagery types that contains an additional thermal-infrared band).
