</o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]--></head><body lang=EN-US link=blue vlink=purple><div class=WordSection1><p class=MsoNormal><b>Install on Win Server 2008: <o:p></o:p></b></p><p class=MsoNormal>I appreciate the responses I received regarding installing Arc Server on Win 2008 and the differences between ArcIMS and Arc Server. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Permissions can be a pain – simply getting out to the Internet with MS IE on Win Server 2008 is a pain. I did shutoff the UAC, regardless of the warnings. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The primary problem I encountered – and it’s resolution – was much simpler than the technical answers I was given. I learned that <b>copying 4+ GB of data from a desktop to a remote server over a “Remote Desktop Connection” is unreliable</b>. For reasons unclear a simple copy over Remote Desktop took > 25 minutes on a Gigabit network. This is complicated by VPN requirements, since the servers are behind a firewall. The GIS Server received about ¼ of the 4.n GB attempted. Because the directory structure was completed on the server it wasn’t obvious how much data was missing. That was the reason my install failed – but I received no useful error codes. The install simply refused to continue. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><b>The solution was to set up a shortcut on my GIS desktop to a shared directory on the server</b>. This is similar to a network share, but less demanding on the system. It is invoked only when needed, not required at startup. Since the VPN and server login was already up, it requires no login. Copying >4 GB of data over the shortcut took <6 minutes, about ¼ of the time required by the failed copy over Remote Desktop. I can’t explain the difference. Hard drive power saving might have been involved. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>After I copied the Arc Server ISO [and verified the size], expanded with WinRAR, the Arc Server setup was flawless. It’s important to follow the ArcGIS Installation Guide section for Win Server 2008/R2, but I had already done that. In the end it was less trouble than setting up ArcIMS: I did not need to buy, download and install a Servlet Engine, which saves a > $2,000 and a lot of complication. There was no requirement to set up a plethora of directories with a variety of network permissions as ArcIMS demanded. I installed everything on the Arc Server Install except SDE {I have not purchased SDE]. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><o:p> </o:p></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b>The only surprise was that I should have purchased all of the extensions for Arc Server that I have on ArcGIS. <o:p></o:p></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><b>ArcIMS VS. Arc Server<o:p></o:p></b></p><p class=MsoNormal>I now accept that ArcIMS has been replaced. Strangely I received communication from one ESRI staff member indicating this wasn’t true. Three other ESRI technical people disagreed with very complete, technical explanations. Robyn Garrett from ESRI in NC responded to the misinformation first. In the end David Crosby [not related to David of C,S, &N] from the North Carolina ESRI office walked me through some simple tests that verified my install was complete and gave me assistance on understanding how to use the new software. I like the system but it will take some time to learn it. I now understand why the phrase ‘standalone’ was applied to ArcIMS so often: Arc Server is tightly integrated to desktop ArcGIS and that will eventually make my life easier. He also has sample apps that can be downloaded by users, which I hope to avail myself of. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>I still wish I could identify the DEP employee I had lunch with at the SHRUGinar so I could see his sample apps. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>I will use apps from those who offered. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Jeff Engerski, Sai Vaddadi, Mark Welsh, Brent Kastor,Jason Griffin, Shawn Lewers and others offered help. I appreciate that. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>In the end, once the reasonable instructions of the Install [Section on 2008 R2] are followed, the install was smooth and easy. I’ve installed 4 versions of ArcIMS, all as a one-man GIS team, and this was much easier. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:8.0pt'>William B.
