It works. I used that method when I was working for Gulf Islands National Seashore and because we have barrier islands that go from here in Florida all the way down to Mississippi, I would have that problem when trying to create maps of recreational areas et. al. So I just manually created a polygon and then drew its boundaries around all of the islands.
