Time for the release of a new versions of ArcGIS. This time it will be 10.5. So when will this new version be coming out?<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>According to Esri, it will be released in December. Of course as with all new releases that is subject to change. However, Esri has been pretty good about meeting release deadlines. My guess is they will release it even if they have to drop some enhancements or improvements they had planned. So what can we expect in this new release?<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>That is a good question. Sadly, I have not been able to find too much information about what will be included in the new version. Here is what I do know. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>ArcGIS 10.5 will include more name changes. However, unlike 10.0 which got rid of our much beloved ArcView, ArcEditor and ArcInfo by replacing them with Basic, Standard and Advanced, this new version name changes are relatively minor. Esri is removing the “for” from the names of its products. For example, ArcGIS for Desktop will now be called ArcGIS Desktop. Esri says this is being done because of feedback from the user base. It will not change any of the functionality or applications. ArcGIS Desktop will still include ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcGIS Pro, ArcScene and ArcGlobe. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>A bigger change is ArcGIS Enterprise. ArcGIS Server is being renamed ArcGIS Enterprise. This represents Esri’s move to have a fully integrated suite of enterprise solutions. However, ArcGIS Enterprise will not be limited to just ArcGIS Server. It will include ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Portal, SDE, and so on. One improvement to ArcGIS Server will be a new installation wizard for configuring Web GIS. The new wizard is reported to be simpler to use. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>A big focus of ArcGIS 10.5 will be supporting Big Data. Initial reports show Esri will be releasing at least three new tools to support the use and analysis of Big Data, GeoAnalytics Server, Image Analytics Server and ArcGIS GeoEvent Extension for Server. These three new products are designed to enhance each other for increased analysis capability. They will be accessible from ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise.
