Hello everyone,
Last week and over the weekend, Esri released ArcGIS 10.9 and ArcGIS Pro 2.8. There are a few things you should know about these two new releases. Since both of these are new releases, we do not recommend you update your production environment to either of these unless you do some testing beforehand to verify functions critical to your operations work and run smoothly.

ArcGIS 10.9

This new version is the first that does not include an update for ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap and ArcCatalog). ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.1 represents the last version Esri will release. Esri has indicated they will continue to support ArcMap and ArcCatalog 10.8.1 till 2026 so you still have some time. However, if you have not already started to do so, now is the time to start planning your migration to ArcGIS Pro. We can help you with that migration if needed.

So if ArcGIS Desktop is not part of ArcGIS 10.9 what does it include? The answer is ArcGIS Enterprise. ArcGIS Enterprise includes several components: ArcSDE, ArcGIS Server, Portal for ArcGIS, and Web Adapter. If you are not using any of these or are not planning to, then you do not need to continue reading this section and can skip to ArcGIS Pro 2.8. For those running earlier versions of these components, you might find some of this interesting. So what does ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9 include:

Two-way edit syncing between organizations using the distributed collection for shared layers

New REST resources introduced, /export and /import. These resources should make it easier to move content between environments within an organization. For example between development and production.

Append data to a hosted data feature layer from shapefiles, CSV, Spreadsheets, or GeoJSON files.

Increased admin reporting capability in Portal for ArcGIS.

Inclusion of ArcGIS Solutions app. This allows users to more quickly deploy specific Esri-developed solutions through your ArcGIS Enterprise installation.

Integration with OpenID

Support for Multifactor authentication for built-in ArcGIS Enterprise accounts.

ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9 is the last version that will support publishing from ArcMap.

These are just some of the new or changed capabilities for ArcGIS Enterprise 10.9. For a more complete list and description, I encourage you to go to - https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-enterprise/announcements/whats-new-in-arcgis-enterprise-10-9/.

ArcGIS Pro 2.8

This new version of ArcGIS Pro continues to build on the overall useability of the application with a focus on performance and productivity. With that in mind here are some of the improvements we thought were important.

Increased performance with opening various items including

Projects

Maps

3D Objects

Tables

Less time to save a project

Faster drawing of labels including those with halos

Faster execution speeds running geoprocessing and raster tools

Faster loading of models and working in ModelBuilder.

Faster rendering of features from SDE and feature services

You can now search and run user interface commands from the results

When running geoprocessing tools, a banner will appear if Esri thinks there might be another tool that would be faster or provide better results.

Addition of new Data Engineering views to help you better understand your data and prepare for specific workflows.

Export Layouts as accessible PDF files.

Again these are just a few of the key updated found in this new version. For a more complete list of all the updates go to - https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/get-started/whats-new-in-arcgis-pro.htm.

We have been involved in the beta testing of this new version of ArcGIS Pro. It has appeared to be pretty stable and does seem to run a bit faster than previous versions. Having said that, we would still encourage you to test it using your most common workflows before putting it into production.

Hopefully, this information is helpful. Things seem to be changing so fast it is hard to keep up.

Tripp Corbin, MCP, GISP
Implementation Manager

eGIS Associates (a part of the Davey Resource Group)

tcorbin@egisassociates.com or tripp.corbin@davey.com

eGIS Office:678-710-9710

Davey Resource Group Office: 770-619-5545 Ext 6722

www.egisassociates.com
