Thanks Janine.=20
The information below was taken from the following DEP guide (the guide =
can
found in your sqg reference cd or on the DEP web page
www.dep.state.fl.us/waste):
"Paint and Body Shops A Guide on Hazardous Waste Management for =
Florida's
Paint and Body Shops"
1. Waste paint-contaminated materials, such as paint booth filters, =
masking
paper and overspray paper, may be hazardous because of heavy metal =
pigments
in paints.
2. Hazardous wastes can be minimized with equipment that has greater =
transfer
efficiency. Reducing wastes saves money and makes cleanup easier.=20
3. Paint chips from sanding and spent grit blast media may be hazardous
because of heavy metal pigments in paints.=20
4. Rags contaminated with solvents or other substances may be a =
hazardous
waste. If the shop washes rags, water must be discharged to a publicly =
owned
sanitary sewer, not a storm sewer, septic tank or cesspool. If you
use a towel service, make sure the company discharges its water to a =
publicly
owned sewer system. Disposable rags or paper towels used with hazardous
substances should be disposed of as hazardous wastes. They should not be
disposed of in a dumpster.
5. Water should not be used to clean shop floors because it may be
contaminated by hazardous materials on the floor. Contain and clean up
spills. Prevent water from entering floor drains by plugging drains.
6. Waste paints, paint strippers and thinners may be ignitable and may
contain hazardous materials such as toluene, xylene, acetone, methyl =
ethyl
ketone, petroleum distillates, methylene chloride or methyl isobutyl =
ketone.

Subject: [Sqg-program] Tape and Paper from spray paint
A question has come up on the proper management of masking tape and =
paper =3D
used to mask a vehicle during a touch-up process. Paints have Chromium, =
=3D
Copper and Lead compounds. I know we discussed this several years ago, =
but =3D
uncertain of the final consenus. Is it solid waste or hazardous waste?
Thanks
Patty
