Subject: [FLHHW] Join the national dialogue - Disposal of household
pharmaceuticals

It's not ok to flush old drugs down the toilet any more - to learn why =
not,
read some of what is available at the EPA's web site for Pharmaceuticals =
and
Personal Care Products
(http://www.epa.gov/nerlesd1/chemistry/pharma/index.htm )

So what should people be doing with their old drugs?=20

There are a few programs for pharmaceutical take back. The RUM (Return
Unwanted Medicines) program in Australia has been successful. Canada =
(British
Columbia and Prince Edward Island) has also effectively collected old =
drugs.
Small local programs are starting around the U.S.

It's time for us to open a national dialogue about this topic. Attention =
to
this issue ranges from Maine to Washington and includes individuals from =
EPA,
FDA, state environmental groups, state health departments, and =
pharmacies to
name a few.=20

A teleconference to bring all these players together will be planned in =
the
near future. If you would like to be included on the ground floor of =
this
national dialogue, please send your contact information to:
Laurie.Tenace@dep.state.fl.us . Also, please send me information about =
any
local, state, national, or international programs, legislation, etc. =
that you
know about.

Please feel free to distribute this email.

Thank you,
Laurie
