The State, federal and local governments continued emergency =
recovery
operations over the weekend in the wake of Hurricane Charley. As of this
afternoon, more than 21 shelters across 11 counties are providing homes, =
food
and water to affected residents. Since the storm hit, power has been =
restored
to more than a million people and major roads are already cleared of =
debris.
On Saturday, August 14, Secretary Castille issued an Emergency Final Order = for immediate environmental activities across Charlotte, Collier, Lee, = Sarasota, Manatee, Hardy, Desoto, Polk, Highlands, Lake, Orange, Osceola, = Seminole, Volusia and Brevard counties. The Department is assisting emergency = responders to repair, replace and restore structures, equipment, power and water = supplies affected by the storm.
All Department District and Division facilities are open today, with the = exception of our office in Punta Gorda, which was damaged in the storm. Regulatory = Staff in the Northeast, Northwest and Southeast Districts and in the Waste, = Water and Air Divisions are assisting with damage assessment, restoration and = clean up operations in the affected areas.
All
state parks and preserves are open in Districts 1, 2 and 5. Due to power
outages, construction damage and debris, several District 4 state parks =
in Southwest
Florida are closed, including Delnor-Wiggins=
Pass, Lovers
Key, Mound Key, Cayo Costa, Koreshan, Don =
Pedro Island, Myakka River, Paynes
Creek, Highlands Hammock, Gasparilla
Recreation & Parks and State Lands Staff volunteers are currently working to = deliver and distribute essential necessities and to clean up, rebuild and = restore park facilities. Throughout the coming days and weeks, Department volunteers = will continue emergency operations to restore communities and ensure that = residents and local governments receive the aid they require to rebuild quickly = and safely.
