Subject: Wood Conference - Register Now!

I would like to bring to your attention, and encourage someone from each =
of
your agencies to attend, a conference on, "Environmental Impacts of
Preservative-Treated Wood." It is being presented by the Florida Center =
for
Environmental Solutions at the University of Florida and will be held at =
the
Orlando Airport Marriott on February 8 - 11, 2004. For more information,
please click on www.doce-conferences.ufl.edu/wood.=20

We have all become aware of the concern over leaching of arsenic from
chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treated wood. The wood treating industry =
has
entered into a voluntary ban with EPA on CCA treated wood for =
residential use
beginning January 1, 2004. But what about the management and disposal of
waste pressure treated wood already in use that will be entering =
Florida's
solid waste stream over the next 10 - 20 years? As you know, the =
Florida
DEP's Solid Waste Section is so concerned about the impact of this =
material
on Florida's environment, they have convened a Technical Advisory =
Committee
(TAC) to study the issue in anticipation of future rule making and/or
legislation which would change the way waste pressure treated wood is =
managed
and disposed of in Florida.=20
=20
If you regulate people or companies that grind wood, handle mulch, =
operate a
landfill, haul solid waste, or handle construction and demolition =
debris, you
should learn more about this important issue. The treating industry has =
used
about 30,000 tons of arsenic to treat the wood that has been sold in =
Florida
since 1970.
=20
Please try to attend yourself or have someone from your agency attend. =
Thank
you....
