Tips: Pollution prevention for auto body repair shops=20

Common pollution concerns surrounding auto body repair shops include the
emission of volatile organic compounds, hazardous dust that can enter =
local
waters through stormwater runoff and the use of toxic thinners and =
solvents.=20

Implementing some of these tips, courtesy of the Colorado Department of
Public Health and Environment, may help your shop minimize potential =
harm to
the environment.=20

Process=20

*	Keep records of how much paint and thinner are used by each employee.

*	Scrape paint cups to remove residual paint before cleaning them with
solvent.=20
*	Vacuum and/or sweep up sand and filter dust instead of mopping.=20
*	Maximize the density of racked parts.=20
*	Use a two-stage cleaning system for spray guns (using dirty solvent
for the initial cleaning, followed by clean solvent).=20
*	Use one solvent for cleaning to reduce inventory of hazardous
materials.=20
*	Use as short a paint supply line as feasible to minimize solvent
cleaning.=20
*	Plan your paint schedules to minimize color change and gun cleaning.

Equipment=20

*	Use an enclosed paint gun washer.=20
*	Use reusable paint booth filters.=20
*	Use sealed downdraft paint booths.=20
*	Use easy-to-clean Teflon paint cups.=20
*	Use a computerized paint mixing system.=20
*	Use a solvent distillation unit.=20
*	Use high-volume low-pressure (HVLP) paint guns.=20
*	Use equipment booths with baffles and filters with decreasing pore
size to improve filtration efficiency and reduce filter waste.

Material substitution=20

*	Use high-solids/low-VOC content paints and coatings.=20
*	Replace paints that contain lead, chromium, cadmium and barium.=20
*	Minimize or eliminate the use of hazardous paint-removing/cleaning
solvents such as methylene chloride and methyl ethyl ketone.

Training=20

*	Train painters to maximize their transfer efficiency.

Energy efficiency=20

*	Replace filters regularly to prevent clogs that reduce air flow,
increase work of fans and reduce energy efficiency.=20
*	The standard V-belt drives on exhaust fans should be replaced with
synchronous belt and sprocket drives to reduce electrical usage.=20
*	Use outside air for compressor intake. Outside air, on the average,
is cooler and denser. Outside air thus requires less energy to compress. =

*	Fix air leaks in compressed air lines. Air leaks require the
compressor to work extra hard. A few 1/8-inch leaks can cost thousands =
of
dollars in energy bills annually.=20
*	Use engine oil from vehicles in a waste oil heater.=20
*	Use a radiant heating system.=20
*	Insulate dock doors and reduce air leaks around dock doors.=20
*	Install high-efficiency lighting with T-8 and electronic ballasts.
