Subject: [FLHHW] Pharmaceutical waste issues -- national email =
discussion
group
At the recent North American Hazardous Materials Management Association
conference in Miami Beach, Florida, (December, 2004), a session was held =
on
pharmaceutical waste issues. This appears to be an emerging issue of =
concern
to a wide variety of people across the country.
=20
Laurie Tenace from the State of Florida's Department of Environmental
Protection and Dave Galvin from the Local Hazardous Waste Management =
Program
in King County (Seattle, Washington) agreed to kick off a national
coordination and discussion group via an informal email list. If you =
want
to be on this list serve for future emails, please let Dave Galvin know =
at
dave.galvin@metrokc.gov . As this email exchange begins to circulate, =
we
hope that additional people will sign on; if you know of someone who =
should
be included, feel free to forward this note and have them contact Galvin =
to
be added to the master distribution list.=20
=20
The intended purpose of this informal email exchange is to share =
information
about projects around the country and to connect people interested in =
the
issue of waste pharmaceutical management from local, state, national and
private perspectives. We hope you will participate in the dialogue and =
help
these diverse interests to debate options and possibly move forward =
toward
some kind of national model or solution to this emerging waste =
management
issue.
=20
At the Florida meeting we heard about pilot projects to collect waste
pharmaceuticals=20
* in Alachua County, FL (contact Kurt Seaburg for more info at:
kurt@alachua.fl.us );=20
* in Clark County, WA (contact Jim Mansfield at: 360-397-6118 x4016 );=20
* in Montague/Franklin County, MA (contact Athena Bradley c/o Lynn
Rubinstein at: lynn@nerc.org );=20
* in South Portland, Maine (contact Lynn R. at: lynn@nerc.org ); and=20
* in San Francisco, CA (contact Kelly Moran at:
kmoran@tdcenvironmental.com ). =20
=20
There are likely others, which is one reason why this list was created, =
so we
all can keep up-to-date. Maybe those listed above could give us a quick
update, plus a link to more info? I also know that many of us have been
lobbying Scott Cassel at the Product Stewardship Institute to pick up =
this
issue and assemble a national dialog similar to how PSI has successfully
addressed other topics. Stay tuned for more on this from Scott.
=20
Galvin and Tenace agreed to kick this off. Galvin has no ownership of =
this
thing, nor the desire to spend endless hours keeping email lists =
up-to-date.
If you want to volunteer to take on the management of this email group,
please say so and a fresh King Salmon will be shipped to your doorstep
overnight.
=20
O.K. here goes (have you read the book, "Push Enter"?). Let's roll and =
have
some productive fun with this. I look forward to the exchange.
