DEP SPONSORS THREE REGIONAL BUILDING DECONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS REUSE
WORKSHOPS

--Deconstruction reduces waste and reuses valuable resources--

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP),
through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region IV, is
offering three one-day workshops on building materials recovery, reuse and
recycling in Okaloosa, Brevard and Sarasota counties. Designed for growth
management and building officials, construction industry leaders, landfill
owners, contractors and developers, the informational workshops are free to
participants and include an optional site tour on the second day.

"Deconstruction is a viable alternative to demolition and provides
environmental benefits by reclaiming building materials for reuse rather than
wasting valuable resources and landfill space," said DEP Secretary Colleen
Castille. "Alternatives to construction and demolition debris disposal can
save money in avoided fees and potentially generate income from the sale of
recycled and/or salvageable materials."

The first day of the workshops will cover deconstruction techniques and
benefits, materials reuse and recycling, sustainable construction, building
for the next disaster, ordinances and policies related to construction and
demolition debris recycling, and products made from recycled/reclaimed
materials. The Brevard and Sarasota workshops will offer second day site
tours. Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Certification
Program continuing education credits (CEU's) will be available for workshop
attendees.

The workshops will be led by Mr. Brad Guy from Pennsylvania State University,
formerly with the University of Florida. Mr. Guy is President of the
Building Materials Reuse Association and co-founder of the Florida Green
Building Coalition. Local reuse and recycling companies will be
participating as well.
