Global PC growth tops 12 percent

According to reports released by both IDC Worldwide (Framingham,
Massachusetts) and Gartner Inc. (Stamford, Connecticut), worldwide personal
computer shipments grew by 12.5 percent - with 61.1 million units shipped -
for the second quarter of 2007. Four of the top five PC companies showed
double-digit growth in global shipments, with only Dell (Round Rock, Texas)
losing ground. The company shipped 4.9-percent fewer computers for the
quarter over the same period the previous year, according to the IDC report
and 5.5-percent fewer according to Gartner.
       Hewlett-Packard (Palo Alto, California), meanwhile, retained its top
spot, with over 11.3 million PCs shipped globally, good for 36.5-percent
growth for the quarter.
       Portable computers continued to push consumer sales, noted in both
reports as being a key driver for sales in each region.

Goodwill and Dell to expand e-scrap program

Under the rubric of their joint e-scrap collection RECONNECT program, Dell
(Round Rock, Texas) and participating Goodwill Industries locations will be
expanding to include 50 percent of Goodwill locations nationwide by 2008 and
50 percent of U.S. households by 2009.
       There are 170 Goodwill organizations in the U.S. and each is an
independent entity with its own management and supervisorial board.
       According to Bryant Hilton with Dell Public Relations, "The goals are
set by a RECONNECT steering committee made up of Goodwill and Dell
representatives - the Goodwill representatives come from existing RECONNECT
partners (for example, the current chair is the executive director of the
Goodwill Association of Michigan, one of the partners), and Goodwill
locations interested in starting new programs."
       Currently, the RECONNECT program is active in:

*	California (San Francisco and San Diego)
*	Michigan (entire state)
*	New Jersey (entire state)
*	North Carolina (49 of 100 counties, with the cooperation of three
Goodwills)
*	Pittsburgh (greater area)
*	Texas (Central and South Texas - partnerships with Austin and San
Antonio Goodwills)

New Energy Star standards in effect

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy's
(both of Washington) joint program for setting energy efficiency standards
recently launched Energy Star 4.0 - updated requirements for office
equipment. The new standards affect ratings for desktop and laptop computers,
copiers, fax machines, printers and other office equipment.
       The new standards require that machines should use 30 percent to 75
percent less electricity than standard equipment. Specifically, computers
should run at 80-percent minimum efficiency, with desktop PCs running at less
than two watts while in standby mode and less than four watts in sleep mode.
Laptop computers would be expected to run on less than 1.7 watts in standby
mode and less than one watt in sleep mode.
       According to Energy Star metrics, over the next five years, qualified
products will save U.S. consumers almost $5 billion in utility costs.
       The new requirements, and a list of qualified equipment, are available
online
