Oregon's New Paint Stewardship Law: A Model for Public/Private Collaboration
Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
1:00-2:30 PM EST

Website:
http://www.productstewardship.us/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=581

Oregon's first-in-the-nation paint stewardship law will dramatically reduce
the environmental impact of unused paint and could potentially result in up
to $6 million annually in cost savings for local governments. The program is
the result of a national agreement facilitated by PSI, which convened paint
manufacturers, retailers, contractors, recyclers, and government officials to
jointly develop a solution that is environmentally sound and economically
efficient. On this call, parties to this agreement will provide an overview
of how the Oregon law addresses paint source reduction, reuse, recycling,
infrastructure development, retail collection, and program evaluation. They
will discuss how the dialogue process developed legislation that was endorsed
by all stakeholders, and share plans to roll out this approach to other
states to address leftover paint as well as other products.

Presenters: Scott Cassel (PSI), Abby Boudouris (OR Department of
Environmental Quality), Alison Keane (National Paint and Coatings
Association), Barry Elman (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Scott Klag
(Metro Regional Government, OR), Jim Quinn (Metro Regional Government, OR)
