FYI on USGS Emerging Contaminants Project. See link below. Please note there are other good interviews and information on this web page from the Indiana Sea Grant/Cooperative Extension Service. Glen

Be sure to note (I didn't at first) that this is a two page wide pdf.

Courtesy of Laurie Tenace who picked it off the national pharmwaste listserve, here is a good interview with Dana Kolpin about the history of the science that USGS did that elevated emerging contaminants in our water to their importance today. He traces the progression of the studies (with hot links to the studies) from groundwater (2002) to drinking water (2008) to landfill leachate (2012) to the current investigation of livestock operations as a source. He explains complications that degradates, complex mixtures and difficult matrices bring to investigating the fate and transport of these compounds.

Despite not being a chemist, I did find the discussion of methods development interesting. [QA/QC interesting? Surprisingly, yes.] I did not understand much about the discussion of a diagnostics component used in more recent studies "to help determine what other chemicals [besides the ones we are looking for] are also present" but it sounds like a pretty useful tool to zero in on what other analytes should be added to the testing suite in follow on studies.

Kolpin makes a point then gives an example to illustrate it that actually does illustrate his point. Gee, a scientist that can translate and explain science without dumbing it down. There's something you don't see every day.

A good read that you can do in the time it takes to drink a diet Mountain Dew or sip a cup of rooibos tea.

Jack,
I was looking at the Pharmwaste archives and found this: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/unusedmeds/upclose/

Sometimes things go directly to the archives and we don't see them.
