HHW Program Tour - May 2nd
The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program Tour will start with the
City of Jacksonville's HHW Facility. The facility has been in operation since the mid 1980's. It is open to the residents of Duval County and served over 11,600 residents in 2015.

Nicole Easter, Project Manager with EQ, A US Ecology Company, will provide a
Lab Packing and Chemical Segregation training class at the HHW facility. This "hands on" training class will cover:

  * Description of characteristic waste, including waste code determination
  * Proper segregation and storage of chemicals to avoid reactions
  * Description of proper DOT shippable containers and the packing of chemicals in the containers per DOT
  * How to pick proper shipping names
  *   Packing of Universal Waste
  * Items of handling concern in HHW facilities
  *   Proper characteristic testing
  * Review of oxidizer identification and safety

The tour will move to a nearby City of Jacksonville Fire station where Captain Steve Riska will demonstrate a flare extraction system used in empting the propane tanks that are collected by the Jacksonville HHW facility.

The last stop on this tour is the Republic Services Recycling Center. The Jacksonville location is an impressive 70,000 sq. ft. green Material Recover Facility (MRF) dedicated to the mechanical and hand sorting of recyclable materials. The tour group will be able to see how single stream recycled materials (aluminum, plastic, paper, cardboard, glass, cartons, and Styrofoam) are processed to be sold as commodities. The group will have the opportunity to see finished products made from recycled materials that were incorporated into the design of the facility including benches, tables, carpet, counter tops and window blinds. At the end of the tour, Republic Services hopes you will leave with a better understanding of how important recycling is and what it takes to be a recycler for life.

SQG Program Tour - May 2nd
The Small Quantity Generator Program Tour will include the Metal Container Corporation and the Budweiser Brewery.

Metal Container Corp. supplies more than 45 percent of Anheuser-Busch's U.S. beer cans and 55 percent of its domestic lids. The operation also produces cans and lids for major U.S. soft drink companies including PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Hansen Natural Corp.

The plant in Jacksonville currently manufactures 12-ounce and 16-ounce aluminum cans and is expanding its operations to include 16-oz aluminum bottles. This tour will highlight the facility's safety protocols, manufacturing process, and impressive waste management and recycling programs.

Anheuser-Busch operates 12 breweries across the U.S., manages agriculture facilities, is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and has been a leading aluminum recycler for more than 30 years. The Jacksonville Brewery opened in 1969 and encompasses 205 acres.

On this tour, you will hear the story of Anheuser-Busch and hear about what it takes to brew beer at the Jacksonville Brewery. You will follow the 7 Steps of the Brewing Process and along the way, explore the rich history and heritage of Anheuser-Busch. This will be a fully immersive experience that allows you to hear, see, smell, and taste.

Storage Tanks Program Tour - May 5th
Phoenix Products is a leading manufacturer of custom generator enclosures, fuel tanks, and fueling systems for standby power, prime power, and peak shaving power applications. The company's products include an extensive array of UL-listed fuel storage tanks, including the largest rectangular storage tanks in the industry and they pioneered the use of vaulted base tanks.

This tour will be customized toward a field inspector to see the components of the tank systems and how the tanks are manufactured. This will give the inspectors a better understanding of the tank systems that are being inspected and how to ensure the tanks are being operated in compliance.

We look forward to seeing you in Jacksonville in May!
