I would run the tiff through Photoshop and reduce the image resolution,
if all you need is the linework for vectorization. If the map was
scanned at, say, 300dpi, changing the resolution to 150dpi will reduce
the tiff file size dramatically.
Also, consider the free "ECW" compression format, an excellent
alternative to SID.

Good morning everybody, I have received a large TIFF of an old scanned
map that is approx. 450mb.
