shrug-l: New under water ships down under

GIS is great, but so is Google Earth.

Google Earth and Maps have opened up GIS and spatial analysis to users that
traditional GIS could never reach. There is a reason that Google Earth has
over 1 Billion downloads worldwide. Some people just don't have the time,
money, education, specialized training, etc., to dive into hardcore GIS
analysis. Instead, they can *usually* just *see *what they want to know.

In my experience of integrating ESRI, SCADA, MapInfo, Microstation, etc.,
with Google Earth Enterprise and Google Earth Builder, the primary reason
it has been done is to *add* value to the GIS data that the GIS department
has spent so much time and money collecting and analyzing. Google Earth
and Maps in use for an enterprise makes that data *more accessible and
creates new customers for highly valuable GIS data that is usually only
accessed by a few specialists.* If implemented correctly, Google Enterprise
Geo actually makes the GIS department more valuable :)

There will of course be a few funny and incorrectly overlayed pictures when
you are auto processing petabytes of raster imagery that cover
510,072,000 km2 (via Wikipedia) of surface area, but I think that can be
forgiven given the public service of actually making that data/imagery
viewable to a few billion people worldwide for free.

Best Regards,
Jay
