gis-l: importing from interchange files

I am having trouble importing from interchange files. Whether it is =
using
AV3.x old Import71 executable file or the new Conversion Tools in AV9.x. =
I
have done it before w/o problems. Now it will not work. Can't import =
them
either individually or as a batch. Has anybody used this utility lately. =
