All;

If you create maps or work with the Florida version of the National
Hydrography Dataset (NHD) then I need you're input. As many of you know the
NHD is a rather large and complex, yet comprehensive surface water data set.
It is comprised of thirteen feature classes, six of which are the Hydrologic
Unit Boundaries. The State now has received provisional certification on 5th
and 6th level hydrologic unit areas (watershed & subwatershed areas
respectively) from the Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) program (managed by
USGS and NRCS) and we are planning to add these datasets to our SDE
libraries' statewide NHD coverage by the end of January.

In the meantime, the extent of the current NHD dataset extends well up into
GA to the headwaters of the Apalachicola. In that past, we have loaded
subregion areas with waters entering Florida into the SDE library to create
the statewide coverage. Several people have complained that the NHD is too
slow to load and hard to work with because there are so many features outside
the state boundary. Our intent is to limit the dataset to just the subbasin
areas with surface water features entering the state. By doing this we will
cut the size of the area covered by 33% and ensure that most connectivity for
the network is maintained. If doing this will interfere with your units
business needs please contact me no later than December 31 so we can discuss
the issue.

If you are working in a specific area and need the areas extending well into
Georgia for analysis or mapping, the subbasin Geodatabases will still be
available for download via the USGS NHD website
(http://nhd.usgs.gov/data.html). The "NHD viewer" will also allow you to
download the latest USGS posted updates for subbasin areas.

Thank you and happy holidays,
