Good Afternoon,

Here are a few items of general FDEP-GIS information that you might find interesting or helpful.

The majority of questions we've received in the past month or so have involved various Desktop installation and version related issues. If you'll be installing soon, here are a few things to consider.

* Version 9.3.1 versus 10 - Check with your supervisor/program area GIS coordinator first to determine if your section, bureau, division has a policy on which version should be used. This is important to consider in circumstances where a large amount of file sharing is performed. Geodatabases and .mxd's created in 10 may not be functional in 9.3x versions.

* Approximately 270 users within FDEP have installed Desktop version 10

* OTIS/GIS will continue a conservative and flexible approach to modernizing software by continuing to dually support ArcGIS Desktop versions 9.3.1 and 10

* ArcGIS 10 delivers custom tools "add-ins" functionality in a way very different from previous versions. Previous versions of Dataminer, lat-long tool, zoom tool conflict with newer versions so it is important to remove them from computers prior to installing ArcGIS 10. Step by Step instructions included on the version 10 download site perform this cleanup utility in a specific order so it is important to follow the instructions in a step by step fashion skipping no steps.

Question: How can I optimize my computer/troubleshoot issues to improve Map Direct use?

Answer: (provided by Gary Kekelis) http://ca.dep.state.fl.us/mapdirect_docs/MapDirectTroubleshooting.pdf

New Layers in development:
2011 Imagery - A data miner layer/imagery service composed of Aerial imagery "flown" in the winter of 2010/2011 is being built county by county. The first batch of counties (Highlands, Hendry, St.Lucie, Alachua) should be available via dataminer/mapdirect/Image Server by the end of next week.

Interested in mobile ArcGIS?
Many groups within FDEP collect geographic features in the field using a number of different hardware and software solutions. A support group has formed in the Department through which knowledge; allowable software, code and troubleshooting information are exchanged. A few weeks ago Tom Biernacki, Zach Bowden and Jim Cichon gave presentations in Tallahassee that showcased their program area's work with GPS and GIS that may be viewed HERE<http://depnet/gis/index.htm> (see announcements section). If you'd like to be included on a Microsoft sharepoint Mobile GIS support group please reply HERE<mailto:Joe.North at dep.state.fl.us?subject=ArcGIS%20Mobile%20Support%20Group>

Have a great weekend!
