<div>I am leaving for India tomorrow morning -- where hazardous waste
concerns take a different form -- so I won't launch into an eloquent
diatribe about how much I agree with Dave Galvin's sentiment about a
solution (no pun intended) other than local government.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>That being said, I agree that home based med destruction kits are
a bad idea, but it does seem that other forms of acid destruction
might play a role at some point if incineration is not an option
in some places. Perhaps a few chemists need to weigh in on the
conversation.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Thanks for a good dialogue.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>I'll be back in the saddle on March 7th.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Regards.</div>

We are not interested in dealing with a soup of unknown meds dissolved
in a strong acid or base solution. Hmmm, what then to do with
this container...</font><br>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font size="-1">I disagree that the
answer lies in having people bring old meds to the local household
hazardous waste collection service, run by local government.
Those of us in that biz would much prefer a product stewardship model
involving return of waste pharmaceuticals to their place of origin,
either via local retail pharmacies, via pre-paid mailers, or via some
other system that does not put the burden for yet another problematic
wastestream onto local government and onto local ratepayers to pay
for.</font><br>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font size="-1">It is time to come up
with a better, comprehensive solution.</font><br>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font size="-1">Some things to
consider:</font><br>
</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font size="-1">Do you really want to put
containers of hazardous chemicals (that would</font><br>
<font size="-1">"neutralize" pharms) in the hands of the
consumer? Are you not trading one</font><br>
<font size="-1">set of hazards for another?</font><br>
</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font size="-1">What would the consumer
do with the used container of chemicals/drugs?</font><br>
<font size="-1">Seems like there is still a hazardous waste disposal
issue. Very unlikely</font><br>
<font size="-1">that you would be left with a non-hazardous
result.</font><br>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font size="-1">A better way to handle
this would be to encourage the collection of excess</font><br>
<font size="-1">consumer meds by the local household hazardous waste
entity.</font><br>
