Dear Ahmed & Todd,
Here's a link to the 1999 World Health Organization "Guidelines for safe
disposal of unwanted pharmaceuticals in and after emergencies", which
discusses incineration & non-incineration disposal methods:
http://whqlibdoc.who.int/hq/1999/WHO_EDM_PAR_99.2.pdf
Here's a link to the November 2005 Northeast Recycling Council report
"Managing Pharmaceutical Waste: Best Management Practices for Plastic
Medication Containers from Consumers":
www.nerc.org/adobe/PlasticMedicationContainerBMP.pdf
Attachment B of the report (last page) is a recommendation that
medications should stay in their original containers for disposal &
gives reasons why. For sealed containers (e.g., bottles) with
identifying labels that are inside outer packaging (e.g., paperboard
boxes), you may want to remove the outer packaging to reduce the
pharmaceutical waste volume. There may be opportunities for recycling
some types of removed outer packaging.

I share Ahmed Hamza's interest in non-incineration technologies for
disposing of unwanted pharmaceuticals. Recycling of plastic medicine
containers, etc. is also of interest.
I would very much appreciate learning about the list serve mentioned by
Charlotte A. Smith.

Dear Ahmed,
Thank you for your inquiry. At PharmEcology Associates we provide
information on hazardous pharmaceutical waste segregation and are not
knowledgeable about treatment technologies, so I am forwarding your
request to a list serve in the US that includes a variety of state and
industry professionals who may be able to assist you. I am not
personally familiar with any technologies of this nature, but hopefully
someone may respond in a more helpful manner.
Best regards,
