 WORKGROUP FORMED TO TACKLE PROBLEM OF PHARMACEUTICALS IN THE            
 ENVIRONMENT                                                             
                                                                         
                                                                         
 EPA Region 3 recently initiated a workgroup to focus on issues          
 surrounding pharmaceutical compounds. The group will work on a number   
 of projects in the Philadelphia area, such as organizing a 1-day        
 pharmaceuticals take-back program, holding a summit with pharmaceutical 
 companies, working with local waste water pretreatment programs, and    
 working with local teaching hospitals to teach appropriate pollution    
 prevention and disposal practices. A blueprint of best management       
 practices for handling pharmaceuticals is expected by April to help     
 educate EPA, states, healthcare facilities, and others on how           
 pharmaceuticals should be handled.
