PSI Networking Call Series:
February - June 2007

Pharmaceuticals - Product Stewardship on the Rise

Date: Tuesday, March 20, 2007
Time: 1:00 - 2:30 PM EST

Overview: For the past five years, there have been increased efforts to
manage unwanted/waste pharmaceuticals as the scientific evidence linking
pharmaceuticals in waterways with biological anomalies mounts. During
the call, we will explore the main sources of pharmaceuticals that reach
our waterways, promising collaborations, and significant issues that
remain. We will also summarize initiatives across the country that are
either studying the problem or implementing ways to solve it, including
take-back at pharmacies or other collection points. A particular focus
will be on two regional efforts that have been plowing new ground - a
pharmaceutical mail-back project in California and a pharmacy take-back
project in Washington State.

Presenters:

Sego Jackson (Snohomish County, WA)
Sego Jackson is a Principal Planner with Snohomish County. He
represented the interest of local governments as one of the 15
government negotiators in the National Electronic Product Stewardship
Initiative and has been instrumental in developing local, state and
national pilots, programs and policies related to product stewardship.
Sego is the founding steering committee member of the Northwest Product
Stewardhsip Council and a founding councilor of the U.S. Green
Electronics Council. He is a board member of the Product Policy
Institute and is a frequent participant in Product Stewardship Institute
initiatives.

Dave Galvin (King County, WA)
Dave is one of the managers of the "Local Hazardous Waste Program in
King County," which address household and conditionally-exempt small
business hazardous wastes in the Seattle metro area. Waste
pharmaceuticals surfaced a few years ago as an emerging concern in
Washington as well as across the country. Dave has been working with
PSI to establish a national dialogue on this topic while helping to get
a large pilot project for pharmacy take-back started in Washington.
Dave coined the term, "household hazardous waste," and has been working
on small-quantity hazardous chemical issues for more than 25 years.

Jennifer Jackson (East Bay Municipal Utility District, Oakland, CA)
