The following is FYI on the issue of testing for pharmaceuticals and
personal care products in POTW influent, effluent and sludge.

For more information on these methods please contact Brian Englert,

EPA developed, and in 2007 published, three analytical methods to
identify and measure contaminants of emerging concern in sewage
influent, effluent and sludge.

- 1694 Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in Water, Soil,
Sediment, and Biosolids by HPLC/MS/MS

- 1698 Steroids and Hormones in Water, Soil, Sediment, and Biosolids by
HRGC/HRMS

- 1699 Pesticides in Water, Soil, Sediment, Biosolids, and Tissue by
HRGC/HRMS

These Methods are located at EPA's web site at
www.epa.gov/waterscience/methods/method/other.html -- Scroll down to
the bottom of the page and they are the last three methods - 1694, 1698
and 1699.

The methods are also linked on the PPCP website at
http://www.epa.gov/ppcp/

The methods currently cover over 160 chemicals: 27 steroids-hormones,
74 pharmaceuticals or personal care products, and 60 pesticides in
three wastewater matrices: raw and treated sewage water and sludge.
