[Pharmwaste] (no subject)

Hi Susan,

I am a bit behind on email so others may have already posted. We
recommend that toxics and ignitables can be commingled but that
corrosives and oxidizers must be segregated. I see no reason to sort
bulk chemo from other RCRA hazardous wastes. It may work out that way at
the facility, but should not be a requirement. The shipping name also
does not recognize either the presence of liquids or of flammables so
would not seem to be accurate from a DOT hazard class perspective.

Best regards,

A hospital in Ohio is investigating pharm waste. They have received a
quote from a company who currently picks up bulk chemo. The company's
solution to the pharm waste is to co-mingle all waste with the exception
of bulk chemo into one container (toxic, ignitable, corrosive) so the
staff does not have to segregate into different boxes. They then
incinerate the whole drum of co-mingled hazardous waste under NOS Waste
Solids Toxic. I am uncomfortable with this practice and was wondering if
anyone has heard of this practice?
