Jeff,
Our group has been involved with annual survey of drug take-back programs. Results from this survey are published in the National Directory of Drug Take-Back and Disposal Programs. The EPA has recognized our National Directory, and in some areas, applicants for EPA funds are required to register with us. We try to keep a tab on existing programs across the country. The first edition of the National Directory is still available.

We hope to have most of the info on our new website at www.comofcom.com soon.

Additionally, we began collecting data on unused and expired medicines since 2004. This data collection is strictly voluntary and is used primarily for research. Data that contain all the required 5 basic elements (drug name, strength, quantity, reason for return, and zip code) are systematically coded and entered into our National Unused and Expired Medicines Registry. There are about 30,000 items (returned drugs) in this Registry with about 2.5 million pills, capsules, and tablets.

If you need more info, please contact us. And if you have not participated in our annual survey, please consider completing our one-page form to be officially included in the National Directory. We provide an official list of drug take-back programs to the EPA, FDA, DEA, and ONDCP.

With additional funding, we should have the aggregated data available to the public. Raw data may be requested for qualified research purposes.

>I am impressed by the programs and effort being made to address this issue. Is there a central location for information on the various programs we are hearing about?

>If not, it may be good to establish a place to post this information. The list of product stewardship resolutions on athe Product Policy Institute's web site is a good example that comes to mind.

>I am involved with a collaborative effort to plan and conduct a single-day, coordinated drug take-back event at a location within each state in the Potomac River Basin. We noticed an earlier posting about November 13 being a National Pharmaceutical Take-Back Day. Upon researching the issue, Operation Medicine Cabinet in New Jersey (www.operationmedicinecabinetnj.org) is spearheading this and while is being touted as a "National" event (www.americanmedicinechest.org), it seems to be focused on New Jersey.
