Hi Mark,

The Spokane WTE is a smaller 800 ton/day facility owned by the City of
Spokane and is privately operated by Wheelabrator Spokane Inc.(therefore
higher cost per ton) and is burdened with pass landfill contamination
cleanup costs and therefore has a higher tipping fee. We charge
$98.00/ton for regular garbage and $165.00/ton($0.0825/lb) for special
handling waste(such as pharmaceutical waste). The WTE facility is
heavily regulated and is at all times in compliance with all the
regulations. The Facility has continuous emission monitors which tests
the 2 boilers every 15 seconds and is required to do an annual stack
test for the emissions for the other chemicals that cannot be tested
continuously. See our website for test results -
http://www.solidwaste.org/sub75ff.asp?id=5099. The Spokane WTE Facility
was built to avoid additional contamination of our underground sole
source aquifer. We combust returned residential waste pharmaceuticals
with municipal solid waste and produce over 500kwh/ton of electricity
for sale to utility companies.

What kind of costs are you seeing per pound for these waste-energy
facilities to process?

Thanks

Hi Valerie,

Attached is a general statement of why communities and businesses choose
Waste to Energy facilities (WTE) vs landfills, it applies to the
disposal of
waste pharmaceuticals as well. WTE is destruction of waste organics by
combusting the waste as a fuel in a controlled boiler, incineration is
destruction of waste organics in a vessel that is heated with external
fuels, natural gas, coal, oil. If you have any questions, please do not
hesitate to call me.
