NEIWPCC is now accepting abstracts for the 2011 Northeast Water Science
Forum: Science to Inform Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Product
Management, which will be held April 27 - 29, 2011 in Portland, Maine.
Conference Goal
Our goal is to bring together scientists, engineers, local, state, and
federal regulators, and other stakeholders to communicate the latest
findings on pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the
water environment in order to help Northeast states make informed
decisions regarding their policy and management. This conference will
build on the successes of the 2007 Northeast Water Science Forum that
examined the state of PPCP science and research.
The Northeast states have identified contaminants of emerging concern,
specifically PPCPs, as a cross-programmatic research priority touching
on issues of occurrence, fate, human and ecological health effects, and
wastewater and drinking water treatment. PPCPs comprise a vast group of
compounds manufactured in large quantities that are frequently used by
humans (and domesticated animals) worldwide. The 2011 Northeast Water
Science Forum looks to advance the interpretation and application of the
science into policy and regulations, risk assessments, green chemistry
movements, as well as identifying future research needs.
Conference Themes
Possible session topics include, but are not limited to, the following
list of issues:
Identifying PPCPs of Concern;
PPCP Impacts on Aquatic Ecosystems;
PPCP Impacts on Human Health;
Fate/Transport (e.g. source identification and quantification, onsite
systems, etc.);
Treatment and Removal of PPCPs (e.g. drinking water and waste water,
indicator compounds, etc.);
Current and Future PPCP Policy and Regulations (e.g. state, local,
federal, etc.);
Sampling and Analytical Methods;
Risk Assessments and Risk Communication (e.g. public education and
outreach); and,
Product Stewardship (e.g. disposal, take back programs, green chemistry,
etc.).
Abstract Submission Guidelines
Individuals interested in speaking or presenting a poster at the
conference should visit NEIWPCC's website at
www.neiwpcc.org/ppcpconference to submit an abstract online. The
deadline for abstract submissions is Friday, December 31, 2010.
Individuals will be notified of the selection committee's decisions in
