[Pharmwaste] Human Albumin

Hi Leigh,
The answer depends on a number of things:

1. Are the bottles empty?
2. Florida’s definition of infectious waste; (http://www.hercenter.org/rmw/fl-rmw.cfm)
3. Does the albumin contain any pharmaceuticals?
4. Is the albumin sterile? E.g. has it been contaminated with blood or other human body fluids?

If they are empty or solely sterile albumin, with no sharps attached, then it is not considered infectious and can be managed as regular solid waste.

If contaminated, then the bottles should be managed as per the contaminant, e.g. blood, then infectious waste, pharms, then Rx waste.

Hope this helps.

Very truly yours,

Subject: [Pharmwaste] Human Albumin

Should the used vials / bottles of Human Albumin be disposed of in the Black box, pharmaceutical waste containers or the red, biohazardous waste containers?
