[Pharmwaste] RE: Cost free disposal program

Now going into its 5th year, Iowa Pharmacy Association operates a statewide TakeAway program in collaboration with Sharps Compliance Inc.  Pursuant to legislation in 2011, IPA is contracted with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy to maintain, administer and expand our statewide program.  The Board of Pharmacy is allowed to allocate up to $125K per year to support this program, which there is no cost to participate for patients and community-based pharmacies.  IPA continues it collaborative efforts with key stakeholders to ensure this program continues each year.

I am curious who ends up footing the bill for this?  Government? Manufacturer?  Distributor?  Retailer?  The costs have to be borne by someone.

Good Afternoon,

The Vermont legislature has tasked me with developing recommendations regarding the creation of a voluntary statewide drug disposal program for unused over the counter and prescription drugs at no cost to the consumer. Besides Maine's mail back program, I am not aware of anything that exists that would serve this purpose. Can you please let me know if others have ideas or have implemented a drug disposal program that is free to the consumer?
