Highlights
► This study evaluated controlled drug wasting of two hospitals in Albany, NY from 12,345 drug records. ► Only 15 controlled substances (CS) were bedside wasted (of a total 8528g of 38,268g dispensed). ► Three CS (midazolam, acetaminophen-codeine and fentanyl) accounted for 87.5% of the total wasted. ► Of the 13 CS with acute ecotoxicity data in crustaceans and/or fish, diazepam was the most toxic. ► We recommend avoidance of flushing of CS by healthcare and other DEA registered facilities.
