FDA Response Letter to the Coalition Letter Asking for the End to the 'Flush List'

Today the National Stewardship Action Council (NSAC) received a letter from the Food and Drug Administration<http://nsaction.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77cd4d3a1ff267f2a32b53ae4&id=8c077cc7e0&e=c17be9b40e>'s (FDA) Deputy Commissioner of Policy, Planning Legislation & Analysis, Jeremy Sharp in response to the coalition letter NSAC first submitted January 22, 2016. As new sign-ons were added, the updated coalition letter was sent April 19,2016<http://nsaction.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=77cd4d3a1ff267f2a32b53ae4&id=69fbd914a2&e=c17be9b40e> which had 111 signatories (three more have been added since).

The response letter states "FDA supports the proper disposal of unused prescription drugs through take-back programs and continues to include this as the first recommendation in our information to the public." It also states, "there may be situations whereby consumers may not be able to access a take-back program. These alternative disposal options include disposal in the household trash and for a small number of drugs products, flushing down the sink or toilet as soon as they are no longer needed."

In short, the FDA will continue to promote the flush list.

We will continue to take sign-ons and send updated letters to the FDA periodically until this issue is resolved. We will consult with you on other methods that can be employed to end the flush list.
