[Pharmwaste] DisposeRx

Good day all, I spoke with a government affairs representative of Wal-Mart
today in WA's state capitol. One of the things he mentioned as a
clarification may be of interest. He said that DisposeRx is not yet
available for use because it has not yet passed a fish toxicity test.
Perhaps he meant use in WA, or perhaps in other areas as well.

Per my evaluation of the various medicine disposal products being marketed,
they have not yet been fully vetted and tested for effectiveness in
rendering pharmaceuticals non-retrievable or for safety of disposal in solid
waste systems. Independent testing by accredited labs is also needed.

I noted that the recent Trump Administration opioid panel report found that
such medicine disposal products may be useful in areas that lack access to
secure drug take-back programs.

Hi Greg,

Their website claims:

DisposeRx drug destroying gel uses proprietary, patent-pending technology
made of solidifying cross-linking chemical polymers that permanently
sequester all medications.

The website has a link to an in-house paper:

 <http://disposerx.com/dl/DisposeRx_White_Paper_October_2017sm.pdf>
http://disposerx.com/dl/DisposeRx_White_Paper_October_2017sm.pdf

They said they will send me the 3rd party studies they cite sometime today.

The gel forming process is said to take 10 minutes, much faster than the
time needed for activated carbon (Deterra pouches, etc.) to work.

A quick bit of research shows that polymer gels are very resistant to
dissolution, which happens very slowly.

http://wwwcourses.sens.buffalo.edu/ce435/Koenig03.pdf

http://pslc.ws/macrog/property/solpol/ps3.htm

I don't know if after dissolution any drugs could be recovered.

The info they posted about government recommendations is outdated.

Does anyone have more information about the DisposeRx product? I'm wondering
if it actually alters the opioids to a non-retrievable state or if it simply
encapsulates the pills, or the dissolved pills, in the gel in a still-active
state.

Hi Ed and all,

I'm glad this biomedical firm got caught and people were paying attention.

It reminds me of an enforcement case I worked on where a plating shop
allowed acid plating waste to drain down the driveway into the storm sewer.
The acid etched away the concrete--not to mention the acidification of the
water in the River. These guys also poured plating waste into the sanitary
sewer--the floor in the bathroom was eaten away and all cobbled. We did
send them to jail.

Very truly yours,
