KCRA 10/13/2018 06:31:13 PM: ...vicki: thank you for joining us on "common ground," i'm vicki gonzalez. california has a new tool in preventing opioids and other unused prescription drugs from being abused. a new law mandates if you make medication or needles, you have take them back. drug take back is an issue we have been following in kcra 3's "state of addiction" coverage. you could call it a david and golitah battle. california up against the pharmaceutical industry and companies that make needles and other medical sharps. the fight? who pays for the collection and disposal of unwanted medications and needles. >> up until now, it has been the taxpayer. vicki: state senator hannah beth jackson teamed up with california product stewardship council, to get sb 212 before governor jerry brown. >> we passed the first in nation legislation, sb 212, which makes the producers of the products for needles and medicines paid to take them back and set up a statewide system for collection. vicki: while heidi sandborn and her team at cpsc worked to get the goernor's signature, cities and counties started coming up with their own disposal plans. kcra 3 went to several cities as they installed drug drop-off bins. >> the industry actually got to the place where they would prefer a statewide bill and program rather than have a county-by-county approach. >> we know in many instances, companies take no resonsiblity for the end of life cycle of their products. i think that has to change, and certainly this is beginning of that change. vicki: it could be three to four years to get all the free drug disposal sites set up, and the needle mailback program up and running. >> until this program gets up and running, we do have med bins all over california. vicki: as for those needles, most county hazardous waste disposal sites will take them, keeping unused drugs from getting into the wrong hands, protecting the environment, and saving taxpayer dollars. >> we really do want to protect the health of californians, and we hope this bill does that and leads the way for the rest of the county to follow. vicki: and there is another option to clear your home of unwanted and unused medications. on october 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the dea is holding its biannual drug take back day. you can bring any unused or unwanted medications to a drop-off site for a safe and secure disposal. an army of dentists, medical professionals, and volunteers are headed to modesto later this month for a free two-day dental clinic.
