shrug-l: Geocoding Addresses

I need to provide a map for a local set of addresses.  I'm trying to locate 
them by way of Arcview, however I'm running into snags.  I think I need a 
reference theme with a geocoding index, but it won't let me.  Does anyone 
have a particular procedure that works best for them?  Thank you....
