James,
The is a GPS interface script that can be downloaded from the
ArcScrips section on the ESRI support page. I use a Garmin GPS III+ for
my field data, and use that script to download the data directly into
ArcGIS 8.3 from the GPS. I have found that it saves a lot of time
converting file formats.

All, Can y'all help a fellow out of a deep funk? The issue is
tab delimited GPS files saved as .txt files. I download the files from
a Garmin GPSmap168S using Garmin's Mapsource, which exports the .txt
file. My process is to open in Excel; filter, format, apply decimal
degree formulas... and export to .dbf files for import to ArcGis 8.3. =20
In the past I have defined the Time stamp field as
text when importing to Excel, then it carries over to .dbf with the time
info as human readable text. However, sometimes I need to use the time
stamp for charting, filtering etc. Excel will not recognise the text
field as a time value, so I cannot use it as a chart variable, nor can I
use it to categorise values in ArcGis. Any ideas on how to have my cake
and chart it too? Will gladly summarise on list the best solutions.
Cheers, =20
