Where we have a very reliable HP 5000PS 60" plotter here, I would
caution you *against purchasing the HP (almost all of our printers are
HPs by the way).=20
=20
There are two things which you may want to consider if a new piece of
equipment is to be purchased:
=20
HP has some kind of inherent problem matching a 'true' RGB blue ink
value conversion to CMYK in their more recent plotters (there is a
lengthy HP technical note on this)...in fact they call it a feature...in
the new plotters where you can't hit a nice bright blue (think the red
vs. blue state maps for election years) using the RGB color definition
by default. You can work around this by using an alternative blue value
or work to calibrate the plotter if you have color calibration software
and build a custom ICC profile. Stephen and Beverly in our shop fought
this one for a long time during last year's election. Just note that
some blues don't come out the way you intend them to by default.
=20
Secondly, HP dye based inks are not color fast...they look great for a
while but break-down rapidly with exposure to sunlight and age. You can
purchase pigment based inks which are more color stable but I have not
tried these personally.
=20
May I suggest looking into the Epson line of plotters and pro series
printers. I don't know what your max dimension for media needs to be but
we have heard RAVE reviews of the Epson 4000 printer/plotter (roll and
sheet feed). This is in use in several other cartographic/GIS labs we
have worked with and the inks are balanced and very colorfast for
archival quality printing. I don't have access to one directly, but
definitely something to consider and review when making the investment.=20
=20
Good Luck,
=20
Lou

Brian,
We have used the HP 1055CM with great success. It has been a very
reliable plotter on par with the 650/750 series. The plot quality and
speed are very good as well. I have not used the others you mentioned.

I have end of the FY funds and looking to purchase a HP plotter.
Can anyone tell me their thoughts on the 1055CM, 4400PS or the 5500PS?
Any "needed" accessories would be good for each model also.
