MessageHolli,

Using WAAS is has it's problems. The WAAS satellite is geo stationary and
is located in the southeast sky at about 45 - 44 degrees for you in VA, 45 -
46 in FL. WAAS is what I consider non-mission-critical-DGPS. When you do
get it, with either an XRS or a Geo XT, you can reasonably expect a one
meter or better position. You should use the USCG Beacon for Real Time
correction in the Virginia Beach area. You have considerable redundancy of
Beacon coverage in your area. With the closest Beacon located in Driver,
your accuracy should be a very reliable 1 - 2 feet while using an XRS with
good satellite coverage. The Beacon, like all real-time correction sources
has it's weakness. Very noisy power lines, typically high tension lines
that are not well maintained, can be a problem. Also, power sub-stations
and large motors can also be a problem. This interference is very much
localized and it limited to only interfering with the USCG Beacon AM radio
broadcast. Data can always be collected and post processed. It is an easy
procedure that typically takes only a few minuets for a days work.

As for productivity, the XRS is typically a more productive product. The
XRS is more accurate and tracks in canopy far better then the XT. If the
XRS is used with a data logger like the TSCe or the new Ranger it is even
more effective for attribute entry with a full keyboard. If I were to
conduct daily mapping, I would go with the XRS with Ranger. The down side
is the fact that it is a backpack and is fairly large. The fact that is a
backpack it one of the reasons that it is more producing; the antennas is
located in the clear above you.

The Geo XT is a good unit and is widely used in many places for the
collection and maintenance of data. It has a very large selling point, it
is small and portable. Both the tracking and accuracy can be improved with
the use of a Hurricane Antenna. Trimble has a good white paper on the
antennas and accuracy, search on Hurricane.

Renting is a good idea. The availability of Trimble rental equipment is
fairly tight due to Hurricane relief. The Trimble dealer that handles you
area is York Grow, Earth Vector Systems, LOC, 434-817-5000.

I hope this helps,

Feel free to contact me on the side with any question that you might have.

Regards,

Jim Robeson

  Holli,
Based on my experience, which has not been with Trimble units, in order to
get reliable sub-meter locations WAAS correction is not sufficient. I would
only guarantee plus or minus 2 to 3 meters using WAAS alone. In order to get
reliable sub-meter positions in the field without post processing, I use
either Coast Guard beacons or Omnistar corrections. Otherwise post
processing is required.

  I hope this helps.

    Good Morning Everyone -
Yes, I am still plugging the forum for information even though I have
moved. Still the best source for information and opinions.

We are going to be completing some field work in the near future and are
looking into renting a GPS Unit (trying it out before we buy). For
sub-meter accuracy, the following two units were recommended time and time
again, the Trimble ProXRS VS Trimble GeoExplorer XT. I am aware of the
basic differences between these two units, ProXRS has external antennae and
differential GPS and the GeoXT has internal antennae and WAAS. I know which
way I am leaning but would like to hear what any of you have to say before I
commit.

Any personal opinions or criticisms about these units? Which do you
suggest? Any other GPS unit you prefer?

    Thanks - Holli
