shrug-l: Split a column in attribute table

My $0.02 to John's comments: The same is true in ArcGIS (I use 9.0 or 9.1)
for the left, right, mid, and char index functions, though not very
user-friendly. You will be better off by putting the dbf in Excel or
Access, or SQL server (or some other RDBMS) and do the manipulation there
instead of doing it in ArcGIS. By the way, are any ArcGIS developers
listening to this thread?

Thanks

Don't know about doing this in ArcGIS, but you can read the DBF file into
Excel or dBase and do it there using the various string commands. (LEFT,
RIGHT, MID).
